The Integrated Services Digital Network (ISDN) is an intelligent high speed digital facility switched network that provides end-to-end digital connectivity for the simultaneous transmission of voice, data, video and images through a single access point. Primary Rate Interface (PRI) is a standardized interface used for carrying multiple voice or data information on a DS-1 or greater transmission facility. The DS-1 standard of 1.544 Mbps consists of 23 B (Bearer channels) and one D ("Delta channel" or "out of band"). The 'B' or Bearer Channels provide a transmission path for user information, such as voice or data, while the 'D' or Delta channel carries signalling information, such as call set up, packet data and features as calling line ID and name display. Each of the 24 channels operates at 64 Kbps.
PRI Services are offered with two options:
- Bi-directional PRI which supports both incoming and outgoing voice and data calls
- ISP PRI which supports only incoming voice and data calls
